IMPROVISATION

My first contact with the improvisation world was through Early Music, as in the baroque era, as in most musical times, improvisation was part of the knoledge and practice of an instrument, as well as a tool for the development of the musician.

Later on, I got to Primal Singuing, that consists in the direct expression of the inner emotional landscape. A world of sounds that emerges directly from the personal and emotional self. I have been experimenting with this type of singuing, specially togheter with composer Francis García at virtual synthesisers. This is a very emotional kind of vocal improvisation that can deeply touch the listener in a very direct way, appart from any formal or aesthectic criteria.

These explorations opened a way to my contact with the free improvisation world, that has broadened and enrichened my vision a great deal.

PUNTO CERO

Punto Cero is an investigation and improvisational work that combines voz and virtual synthesisers. It gathers ethnic and contemporary influences, and it’s performances indlude movement, theatre and active participation of the audience.

Primal Elements

In Primal Elements, Primal singing is a starting point from wich we want to develop a fussion between the ancestral and the contemporary, working with the human voice and virtual synthesisers, sound that is generated via software. The incredible speed that computers allow nowadays, allow to produce fast and complex digital calculations as a response to the pulsation over a keyboard. This calculations are almost instantaneous. In this concert we use an Apple’s PowerBook G4 togheter with virtual Reaktor synthesiser, from Native Instruments, with 12 miliseconds as processing time. This speed allows software instruments to be performed considering the same principles as in the singin, so that the result can be considered a ‘Primal Music’ a ‘tecnologycal singin” that is linked to the human voice, and both sounds emerge directly from the emotion that arises from the four primordial elements: Earth, Air, Fire and Water.

Francis García. Composer, instrument player and professor. Studied in Madrid’s conservatory and got specialized in electroacoustics in Cuencas GME and at Madrid’s LIEM. For many years he developed a career as a medieval music performer, playing citola in most of the spanish early music groups, like SEMAN. His work as a composer and university teacher is based in aspects like music generated by computers, improvisation, and music composing for video and cinema.

COLECTIVO “JA!” PERFORMANCE: CONDUCCIONES (CONDUCTIONS)

An interactive performance in wich the audience takes the lead!

There are a serie of free improvisation conducting gestures that musicians know and use often. At “Conducciones” we will show you some of the essentials and we will invite you to come on stage and help the performers play with your gestures.

To help you remember them, we will give you a little leaflet that will support what we are showing in the beggining of the concert. After our sucess in this field at Studio Banana (Banana Jam) and Actividarte we are willing to repeat the experience.

We hold a monthly jam session at La Casa de los Jacintos and a monthly concert at Taberna Alabanda. I love to perform there becasue its a great excersize to perform this music with different musisicans from the spanish free improvisation world and it also allows me to be in touch with so many colleages improvisers from Madrid’s scene.
